Our church is small, so we can’t serve alone. Our volunteers come from a half dozen area churches, creating a great sense of cooperation as we all reach out together to help families in emergency hunger situations. Our volunteers also include students from Oregon City High School’s SAGE program, who help each Friday, and another group of students from Gladstone, who arrive early Friday morning to help set up the room and divide bulk food into family-sized baggies.
Although our main purpose is to provide food, we also try to add dignity items to our food boxes, and when funds allow we include coffee and tea, toilet paper, washing detergent, bath soap, toothpaste, diapers, and other personal items.
Local stores provide welcome items, including day-old bread from Safeway, and day-old pastries and sometimes coffee beans from Starbucks.
Even at the end of a busy Friday, we try to smile and put our clients at ease, and we hope that our actions demonstrate our church H.O.P.E. committee’s motto: “He upholds the cause of the oppressed and gives food to the hungry.”
